hi folks,i want to pass on my experience of yesterday,i got a phone call from a foreign chap telling me he was my on-line support? and my computor was running slow,i had a bad sector?,errors and some other things i didnt understand,he then told me to turn on my comp so that he could talk me through what to do and he would fix the problems,i said no i would not do what he wanted and i would ask my son to check it out for all these things,he got a bit stroppy and after some mins of insisting at me said to turn on the comp again i said no,i did keep asking what company he said he was from and he would only repeated on-line support, then he got a bit pushy for want of a better word and told me to put it on i said no i wouldnt this went on for about 5mins in the end i told him i was not going to assist and he could call back later and talk to my son i tried to hang up but when i tried the line he was still on it it was really odd,no he didnt call back thankfully, luckily my son did come in and when i told him about it he said its a scam to get into the comp so they can steal my details and any bank card details,so just a warning of the new scam on the go.i did take a note of the phone number he called from and it is a london number, thing is who do you report it to,my son said the police wont be interested so i thought to pass it on this way, please be carefull of it, i am a very stubborn woman but it only takes on person to do what they want and they get a fortune, i did ask how he knew my name etc but he ignored the question, he was very determind and intimidating even over the phone.

Thanks for this Dorothy. I have had 2 similar calls and as usual, the first thing I asked for was their name and company name. When they wouldn't give either, I put the phone down.

Thanks for putting this scam on the forum.

I had a message sent to me from America saying that my uncle and his family had been killed in a car crash and i was to inherit a million dollars if i could send my bank details!!
I passed the message on to the local police via e-mail and they said they would look in to it. I didn't hear back from them but it may be worth you doing the same. If it saves another vonerable person it would be worth it.

Love Shirley x

It is not just homes that are receiving these calls.

I have received a number of calls on the switchboard at work and the guy at the other end would not take no for an answer when I said that all IT related queries were dealt with by our IT support team.

I have three times on my landline someone telling me that my computer is about to get a virus and I am in danger of loosing all my data.I said that if that was the case my norton would have resolved this and there was no threat at the moment and I am sure that we can deal with it .There are so many scams out there just use your head if you dont see a problem why should anyone be telling you there is.I have had e mails telling me to reactivate my password for and account at Nat west bank which I have never banked with and will never do so but there will be a probable 3 out of ten people which will do it and fall for the scam.Take care people x

It's a sad reflection on our times when privacy is invaded so much.

Hi Dorothy,

This is a scam which is on going, we get frequent calls from them despite being on call preference service. My husband job is in software and he winds them up and they hand up. BigGrin These companies are sold details from a third party, the best thing to do is just hang up. It's good you posted though as not everyone has heard. Another one is a holiday scam telling you to press 9 which again can cause them to hack into your computer.

Dorothy you can register for free with the Telephone Preference Service and this stops most of these unwanted calls.

Here is the link to register http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/whatistps.html

That sounds awful, it's bad enough when you get email spam, but to be intimidated by phone... it makes me really cross.

These 2 websites are useful as you can log problem callers to share with others. You can put who they said they were too - some numbers come up with all sorts of 'owners'.
If I have a missed call I always google it to see if I should be careful next time the phone rings. We're ex-directory but still get all manner of rubbish.

Thanks for posting this, I'm going to let family and friends know too...

get loads of cold calling on the land line and just tell them that I am the cleaner and there is no one here they soon put the phone down.Ladies you can have a lot of fun with these calls prolong them talk silly pretend your thick and can't understand what there saying I do it's costing there company thousands and no doubt they will call you again in a week or so and you have more fun pretending your an ageing grandma and ask them to repeat the question over and over again. We got so many calls when we were buying a house in spain that in the end my hubby said on several occasions that i had run off with another man and the prospects of buying now are nil. I call it telephone bullying

Hi, I had one of these last week. Asian voice saying his name was John Smith. He told me that my computer was sending messages to the server that it was infected with a virus. When I challenged him by saying that my anti virus was running ok, he got quite stroppy telling me he was trying to help me. When he asked again for access to my computer I told him to hang on while I checked with my provider to see if he was genuine, The phone went dead. My phone has caller id and the number shown was 011.
